PIKEVILLE, Ky. – A squeeze bunt in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the University of Pikeville a win over Cumberland University in the finale of a three-game series on Saturday.
Trailing 5-3 heading to the bottom of the ninth, the Bears loaded the bases with none out when senior Adam Overbay was hit by a pitch, followed by consecutive singles by juniors Sean Ryan and Bryan Bradley. Freshman Erik Manning tied the game with a double to score Overbay and Ryan.
One out later, senior Pat O’Brien laid down a perfect bunt to push Bradley across with the winning run.
Cumberland took the lead with two in the first and made it 3-0 in the third before the Bears rallied to tie the score. Ryan scored the first run when Bradley’s grounder in the infield was misplayed. A single by Manning delivered Bradley, and Manning scored when junior Luke Wright bunted him in.
The Bulldogs won the opener of the series on Friday when they broke open a 3-all tie with four in the sixth and two more in the seventh.
Pikeville took a 1-0 lead in the first when Bradley walked and scored on a single to center by O’Brien. Trailing 3-1, the Bears tied it in the fourth when senior Chris Morford led off with a double and was followed by a triple by junior Chaz Contreras. He scored when Overbay bunted him in.
O’Brien, Morford and Contreras all had two hits in the loss.
