Bears swept by Bulldogs

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville softball team had a rough afternoon on Saturday, getting shut out in the opening game and letting the second one slip away in getting swept by Cumberland University.

The Bulldogs came away with 3-0 and 8-4 wins.

The losses dropped the Bears to 10-17 on the season and 5-11 in the Mid-South Conference. Cumberland University improved to 29-12 overall, 11-7 in the league.

The Bears are on the road both Monday and Tuesday, visiting UC-Clermont and Shawnee State.

Bulldogs 3, Bears 0: Pikeville managed only four this and were blanked in the first game of the doubleheader.

After both teams saw scoring opportunities go by the boards in the first two innings, the Bulldogs took the lead in the third when centerfielder Natalie Garcia bit a solo shot to center. They tacked on another run in the fourth when right fielder Shawnee Kirk singled in catcher Sydney Broderick, who had doubled to get things started.

The Bulldogs tacked on an insurance run in the seventh. It began with two outs when third baseman Kacy Hobbs reached on an error and scored on a single to center by first-baseman Sarah Murray.

Freshman Hollie Hinkle had two of her team’s four singles. Sophomores Jordyn Hale and Kayla Brown had a hit each.

Senior Courtney Patrick went six innings for the Bears, allowing eight hits while striking out one. Junior Caitlin Conley pitched the seventh.

Bulldogs 8, Bears 4: Pikeville took a 4-2 lead into the seventh and led by a run with two outs and none on before the Bulldogs scored five more to secure the win.

The rally began when Kirk led off the frame with a solo homer. Two outs later, Megan Lavery doubled and scored the tying run on a single by Allison Blackwood. That was the first of four straight singles as the Bulldogs had six straight two-out hits to rally for the win.

Pikeville posted three in the first. Right fielder Sarah Belcher led off with a walk and scored when Brown stole second. Senior pitcher Kayla Morgan singled to score Hinkle, who had walked, and second baseman Emily Castle walked and scored on a groundout.

The lead went to 4-0 when Morgan doubled and scored when first baseman Courtney Morgan grounded out.

Cumberland began its rally in the top of the fourth when catcher Jessica Roper hit a two-run homer to cut the lead in half.

UPike had nine hits, with Brown, Kayla Morgan and designated hitter Sarah Kinney having two each. Castle, Hale and Courtney Morgan added singles.

Kayla Morgan went the distance for the Bears, striking out three while allowing 12 hits and eight earned runs.
