PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville softball team has put together its first three-game win streak of the season after sweeping a pair from Union College on Monday.
UPIKE (14-22) won by scores of 5-2 and 4-3.
The Bears have now won six of their last eight games and will be on the road for three doubleheaders this week, beginning Thursday when they visit Campbellsville at 1 p.m.
Union is now 22-11.
UPIKE 5, UNION 2: A four-run first-inning was all Pikeville would need to take the opener.
Freshman Shamy Williams delivered the first run on a double to right, allowing freshman Brandi Jo Howard, who led off with a single, to score. Williams crossed on a ground out by winning pitcher Kayla Morgan to make it 2-0. Junior Hannah Vinson doubled and scored on a pair of illegal pitches. Freshman Kayla Brown singled and, after stealing second and third, scored when senior Mallory George singled to left.
Each team plated runs in the second. Shortstop Brooklyn Hesterberg drew a two-out walk and scored when Kayleen Gary’s infield popup fell and bounced into foul territory.
The Bears delivered their final run in the bottom of the inning when sophomore Kayla Cantrell reached on an infield single and scored on a fielder’s choice.
Union finished the scoring in the top of the fifth when Ashley Wojnowski singled and moved to third on an error. She scored on a bunt by Whitley Cochran.
Morgan went the distance for the Bears, scattering five hits and striking out three.
Vinson and Howard had two hits apiece for the Bears, while Williams, Brown, George and Cantrell had one.
Wojnowski, Gary, Aryssa Puckett, Jamie Cyrus and Leighanna Brett had hits for the Bulldogs.
UPIKE 4, UNION 3: The Bears scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the second, all with two outs. Emily Castle doubled down the left-field line with one out and moved to third when George singled. She scored when Cantrell reached on an error, and Howard cleared the bases with a triple that drew chalk down the right-field line.
After the Bears added one in the third when Morgan walked and scored on an RBI, Union cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth.
Centerfielder Whitley Cochran singled and scored when designated player Courtney Woods’ single was misplayed. Woods scored Wojnowski singled to left to make it 4-2.
The Bulldogs had another two-out rally in the sixth. Woods singled and after the Bulldogs loaded the bases scored on an illegal pitch. In the seventh, the Bulldogs put the tying run on before winning pitcher Emily Poynter shut the door for the win.
Poynter struck out eight in the complete-game performance.
