LAS VEGAS – No. 1 Oklahoma City University had little trouble remaining unbeaten on Monday evening, opening the Trip Sports Las Vegas Shootout with a 97-39 win over the University of Pikeville.
Oklahoma City (9-0) used its full-court press, which it employed most of the game, to force 34 turnovers and put four players in double figures in the win. Pikeville, on the other hand, had no players reach double figures in the scoring column and struggled shooting the basketball all evening.
Pikeville (4-8), which started three freshmen and played four others against the nation’s top-ranked team, made only 25.5 percent of its shots. The Stars, however, shot 52 percent in the win and won the rebounding battle 47-36.
Pikeville was led in both scoring and rebounding by sophomore Brogan Conley, who had nine points and seven rebounds in the game. Freshman Nicole Lyons followed with six points and added a pair of steals. Freshmen Whitney Belle Jackson and Kayla Smith, teammates at Clay County High School a year ago, each had five points and six rebounds.
OCU was led by sophomore Kayla MacKenzie with 17 points off the bench. Senior Taylor Booze followed with 15 on 3-of-4 shooting from the arc. Junior Lauren Gober scored 12 while senior Emily Davis added 10.
Pikeville will be back in action on Wednesday when it meets Viterbo, Wisc., University at the Centennial Hills Community Center. Game time is 5 p.m. EST.
