Bears land transfers, Tennessee prep stars

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville has signed a pair of transfers as well as two high school products from the state of Tennessee.

Cody Malicoat is a 6-5 swingman from Jellico High School, and Zach Howard is a 6-2 guard from Science Hill High School in Johnson City. Both will join the Bears in time for the Fall 2012 semester to continue their educational opportunities and to play basketball.

They will be joined by Trevon Flores, a 6-11 junior from Columbus, Ohio, who played at James Madison University, and Darnell Tubbs, a 6-2 junior from Dayton, Ohio, who played at Columbus State Community College.

Cody Malicoat, originally a Middle Tennessee State University commit, joins UPIKE after a very successful prep career. As a sophomore at Campbell County High School, Malicoat made noise by setting a single game scoring record of 58 points against rival Oak Ridge.

As a junior, Malicoat transferred to Jellico High School where he helped lead his new squad to a regional championship while also posting averages of 23 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists per game and being named District Player of the Year and MVP of both district and regional tournaments.

Malicoat entered his senior campaign rated as the “Top Sleeper” prospect in Tennessee by longtime high school evaluator Rick Bolus. As a senior, Malicoat compiled averages of 22.7 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 6 assists per contest while being named First-Team All-District 4A, First-Team All-Region 2A, Knoxville News-Sentinel All-Prep Xtra Team, and TSWA First-Team All-State.

Zach Howard comes to UPIKE after a very successful prep career at Science Hill High School in Johnson City. Howard, 2012 Big 8 Conference Player of the Year, helped lead the Hilltoppers to a 35-3 record, a No. 41 ranking nationally by ESPN Fab 50 high school rankings, and a Tennessee AAA state semifinal appearance.

Howard finished the season averaging 13 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals per game while shooting 45% from three-point range. Howard’s stellar senior campaign included a 22-point effort in the state semifinals against eventual AAA state champion Memphis East.

Howard was named to the 2012 All-TSSAA State Tournament Team as well as being named the MVP of the Merv Lopes Holiday Tournament in Hawaii.

Darnell Tubbs comes to UPIKE after two very successful seasons at Columbus State Community College. As a freshman, Tubbs averaged 14.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game for the Cougars and helped lead CSCC to a 25-4 record and a No. 11 ranking nationally during his sophomore season while putting up averages of 15.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game.

During his career at Columbus State, Tubbs was twice named a First Team All OCCAA and, as a freshman, was named a First Team NJCAA All Region 12 selection.

Tubbs is a product of Dayton Ohio’s Trotwood Madison High School where he averaged 15.8 points and 7.3 rebounds per game as a senior and was named Second Team All-Area by the Dayton Daily News.

Trevon Flores joins the Bears after two seasons at NCAA Div. I James Madison University.

As a freshman at JMU, Flores started 24 games for the Dukes while setting a JMU record for blocked shots by a freshman (37) while also finishing 10th in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in blocked shots per game. Flores posted a career high of 11 points as a freshman vs. Norfolk State and 9 rebounds as a sophomore vs. Canisius.

In 55 games, 28 as a starter, Flores posted averages of 2.8 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. During his senior season of high school competition, Flores won a Louisiana State Championship alongside Greg Monroe of the NBA’s Detroit Pistons at Helen Cox High School in Harvey, La
