Bears return to national ratings

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – After a six-week sabbatical, the University of Pikeville men’s basketball team has returned to the Top 25.

The ratings released on Monday night have the Bears 23rd in the country.

UPIKE, 12-7 on the season, is the third Mid-South Conference school in the ratings. Georgetown moved up three places to No. 4 while Lindsey Wilson also slid up three slots to No. 8.

The Tigers and Blue Raiders are tied for the league lead at 7-1 midway through the conference race.

St. Catharine College is the only other MSC team to get votes in this week’s poll.

Pikeville is in a three-way tie for third at 4-4 in league play. They are even with Thursday night’s opponent, Cumberlands, and St. Catharine College.

The Bears were ranked No. 1 in the country in the preseason poll released in October, and opened the season with six consecutive wins. Losses in their first two league games and three of their first four dropped them to No. 22 in the first regular-season poll.

The Bears have now won four of their last six games.

While they’ve received votes in each poll, this week’s is the first to see the Bears get enough to return to the Top 25.

Shorter (Ga.), an MSC member in football only, is the unanimous No. 1 team, getting all 12 votes. The Hawks are followed by Robert Morris and Oklahoma Baptist. After Georgetown, Southern Poly (Ga.) rounds out the Top 5.

Rogers State (Okla.) and Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) stand between Lindsey Wilson and the Top 5. Martin Methodist and The Masters complete the Top 10.

Pikeville faces a rugged week that will go a long way toward shaking out the deadlock in the middle of the rankings. After playing Cumberlands on Appalachian Wireless Night Thursday in a game that will be regionally telecast, Lindsey Wilson will come to call on Saturday at 4 on Hall of Fame Day at the university.
