LINCOLN, Neb. – The University of Pikeville will enter the match-play double-elimination tournament at the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships as the third seed when it begins at 5:30 p.m. EDT on Thursday.
The Bears finished the 24-game qualifying portion with a total of 4604, and will face No. 14 Calumet College of St. Joseph in the opening round. Pikeville was the third-seed when it won the NAIA tournament three weeks ago.
They will then battle the team with the same result from the opening-round contest between No. 6 McKendree and 11th-seeded Robert Morris (Ill.) in the second round, which will also be played on Thursday beginning at 7:15.
The tournament will then resume on Friday morning with the 12 remaining teams battling to reach the Saturday-afternoon championship round.
In the other half of the UPIKE bracket, No. 2 Webber International – the team Pikeville beat to win the NAIA championship on April 1 in Indianapolis – will play 15th-seeded Stephen F. Austin, while No. 7 William Penn will meet 10th-seeded Florida State.
The winner of that double-elimination tournament will play the winner of the opposite bracket on Saturday at noon at Sun Valley Lanes for a single best-of-three championship round to determine the 2012 champion.
Among teams in the opposite bracket are No. 1 seed Wichita State and fifth-seeded Maryland-Eastern Shore, the winner of last weekend’s NCAA Div. I tournament and the defending USBC champion.
