PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville Bears split a doubleheader with St. Catharine on Friday evening, falling 11-1 and winning 10-7.
Pikeville, 11-21, improved to 1-11 on the season in the Mid-South Conference. It will return to action on Saturday with an MSC doubleheader at Cumberlands.
St. Catharine 11, UPike 1: The Patriots scored three in the third and added sixth in the fourth to take control of opener for the win thanks to six unearned runs.
While the Patriots had a dozen hits – half of them doubles – the Bears managed only two. Freshmen Brandi Jo Howard and Kayla Brown each singled.
UPike 10, St. Catharine 7: Pikeville needed only six hits to knock off its guest in the nightcap.
Junior Hannah Vinson homered and drove in three, while Howard delivered two runs on a pair of singles while scoring two. Brown and sophomore Emily Castle each doubled and scored, while sophomore Kayla Cantrell singled and scored.
Senior Mallory George walked twice and scored both times on base.
Freshman Courtney Patrick went the distance for the Bears, allowing 10 hits but only three earned runs. She struck out three in improving to 2-3 on the season.
