PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The UPIKE softball team picked up a pair of run-rule wins on Wednesday afternoon, knocking off Bluefield College by scores of 13-0 and 11-3.
The Bears took three of four from the Rams on the season and will return to Mid-South Conference play on Thursday afternoon when they host St. Catharine College. The doubleheader is scheduled for a 4pm first pitch.
Bears 13, Rams 0: The Bears pounded out 14 hits in only four innings at the plate en route to the win.
Freshman Kayla Brown had a double and two singles to drive in four and score once. Junior Kayla Morgan had a single, three RBIs and scored one. Sophomore Emily Castle had a pair of doubles, scored twice and drove one in.
Freshman Shamy Williams doubled, singled and scored a run while freshman Brandi Jo Howard had a pair of hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Junior Hannah Vinson doubled while senior Mallory George singled; both scored twice and drove in one.
Sophomore Kayla Cantrell singled, scored one and drove one in, while freshman Brittany Adams singled and scored.
Morgan pitched all five innings, striking out five and scattering three hits to get the win.
Bears 11, Rams 3: Back-to-back five-run innings helped the Bears beat the rain and sweep the doubleheader.
Trailing 1-0, UPIKE scored five in the third and matched it in the fourth to pick up the win in five innings.
The heart of the Bears’ lineup led the way, as Morgan, Vinson and George had two hits apiece. Morgan and Vinson doubled; George and Vinson scored two each while Morgan crossed once; and George and Morgan had two RBIs while Vinson plated one.
Williams, Cantrell, Castle and senior Ashleigh Stanley added singles. Williams and Cantrell scored twice, Castle scored and drove in one, while Stanley had an RBI.
Caitlin Conley went the distance for the win, scattering four hits and striking out three. Only one of the three runs were earned.
