Belhaven wins 4th straight, 24-14

JACKSON, Miss. – Belhaven University scored the game’s first 24 points to knock off the University of Pikeville 24-14 Saturday afternoon at historic H.T. Newell Field.

Early on it appeared Belhaven would make a mockery of the game, scoring two touchdowns in the first six minutes, getting points via the offense and special teams.

It took only 4:00 to move down the field for the first touchdown, coming when quarterback Alex Williams ended a 62-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown pass to senior Deuce Coon. Joao Bellmonte’s PAT made it 7-0.

After a three-and-out for the Pikeville offense, senior Isiah Wiley took the punt at the 32, slipped a tackle at the point of catch and went 68 yards for a 14-0 lead with 9:34 to play.

But from there the Bears’ defense bowed its back, allowing only a second-quarter field goal, this time by Carl Blundell from 33 yards away, before the half.

Belhaven got the first points of the second half when Williams ended an 80-yard drive with an 18-yard pass to senior Kylan Pollard, with Bellmonte’s PAT making it 24-0.

Pikeville put up touchdowns in both the third and fourth quarter. Both came on the feet of senior tailback Zeke White, who scored first from two yards and then from three, with sophomore kicker Grayson Quick remaining perfect on the season with a pair of extra-point kicks.

The Bears gained 85 yards on 32 carries, with White’s 44 yards leading the way. Three passers combined to go 15-of-34 for 145 yards. Sophomore Tanner Napier caught four passes for 47 yards, while senior Jeremy Hill had 57 yards on three catches.

Junior Kadero Edley led Belhaven with 86 yards on 14 carries as the Blazers finished with 176 yards on 36 totes. Williams finished 18-of-28 for 167 and two touchdowns, finding Cook six times for 58 and Pollard four times for 53.

Three Bears were in on six tackles each to lead the defense. Freshman J.K. Hall had six solos, while sophomore Trey Bartlett had five solos and senior Rodney Dantes three.

Pikeville will finish the 2012 season on Saturday when it plays Union College in Barbourville. Belhaven will host Bethel on Saturday in a game that will decide the Mid-South Conference West Division championship.
