Big first half propels Union to 71-63 AAC win

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Visiting Virginia Intermont tried to rally, but Union's huge first-half lead was insurmountable on Saturday as the Lady Bulldogs recorded the 71-63 Appalachian Athletic Conference victory.

The win is Union's second in a row as it improves to 16-8 overall and 9-5 in conference play. Virginia Intermont is 11-15 overall and 6-8 in the AAC.

The Lady Bulldogs dominated the first half, holding the Lady Cobras to 12 points as they built a 38-12 lead at the break. Union hit 13-of-32 shots (40.6 percent) from the field during the opening period, while Virginia Intermont went 3-for-26 (11.5 percent) from the floor.

But give the Lady Cobras credit as they did not quit in the second half. Union opened the half with a 6-1 spurt to open up a 31-point lead at 44-13. However, Virginia Intermont began to whittle away at the margin, cutting the deficit to 55-42 following a Coco Hull basket with 4:25 remaining. Union responded by pushing the lead up to 61-44 after a pair of Amber Taylor free throws at the 3:32 mark. Yet, the Lady Cobras kept battling and eventually got the margin in single digits before running out of time as the Lady Bulldogs held on for the 71-63 decision.

Senior Lindsey Waters recorded her second double-double in a row, finishing with 18 points and 11 rebounds. She has a conference-best eight double-doubles on the season. Waters also blocked five shots, upping her season total to 77. Lydia Nash and Taylor followed with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

For Virginia Intermont, Ashley Lindholm led the way with 17 points with Rainey Story chipping in 14. Hull came off the bench to contribute 13.

Union finished the game making 36.9 percent (24-of-65 shots) from the field and 4-of-22 (18.2 percent) of its 3-point attempts. Conversely, Virginia Intermont connected on 32.2 percent (19-of-59) of its shots and missed all 11 of its 3-pointers. Free-throw shooting kept the Lady Cobras in the game as they made 25-of-27 (92.6 percent) from the line.

The Lady Bulldogs will travel to Milligan (Tenn.) on Wednesday for another AAC showdown. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
