BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - A trio of Bulldogs combined to drive in 10runs as the Union baseball team scored a 13-2 victory Thursday over visiting Cincinnati-Clermont.
Tyler Brake (Burlington, Ky.) went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and was a triple shy of the cycle. Meanwhile, Joe Engle (Sidney, Ohio) finished 1-for-1 with three RBIs as he belted his fourth home run of the season, hit by a pitch twice and walked once. Donnie Popham (Louisville, Ky.) helped out with a 2-for-4, three-RBI performance.
The victory improved the Bulldogs to 14-14 overall, while the Cougars fell to 2-6.
Popham lined a RBI double in the first, and Brake followed with a solo home run in the second to give Union a 2-0 advantage before everything broke loose in the third. The Bulldogs only had three hits in the third but took advantage of five walks and three hit-by-pitches in pushing nine runs across. Brake had a three-run double, while Popham added a two-run single as Union built an 11-0 advantage.
In the fifth, Engle launched a two-run home run to make it a 13-0 contest.
Clermont scored a run in each the sixth and seventh innings, making the final 13-2.
Jordan Mynear (Carlisle, Ky.) picked up the win to go to 3-0 on the year. The junior right-hander allowed no runs on four hits and no walks with three strikeouts.
Union returns to action Saturday and Sunday with a three-game, Appalachian Athletic Conference series at Bluefield (Va.). Saturday's doubleheader will start at 1 p.m. as will Sunday's nine-inning contest.
