PRESTONSBURG, Ky (WYMT) - The WYMT sports team made its way over to Prestonsburg as part of our high school interviews. Monday we caught up with the Blackcats, a team who had won 4 district titles in a row, until they were dethroned by the Leslie County Eagles. Coach John DeRossett talked about how tough the district has become.
"It's really good. You know Leslie County came in to our place and beat us. Coach Melton is doing a great job over there. I saw you guys' interview with him. They talk about the same things that we talk about. Getting in the weight room and getting focused", said Prestonsburg head coach John DeRossett.
"Betsy Layne, they have really come one. You know, they beat us this year in seven on sevens in the summer. They have a lot of athletes playing. So the district is not a given. it's a step by step thing, and our kids know, as well as those coaches know. If you are number one in the district you got two at the house. I mean that's the way it works. If you are second, chances are you go on the road, if you don't get beat in the first round. You are three or four, you are on the road. We always want to be at home. Our goal is a district championship, but we know those guys are working hard too. we just want to keep our nose to the grindstone and be ready when that time comes", according to DeRossett.
Prestonsburg begins their season Friday, August 17th at home as they play their first game on their new turf versus the Perry Central Commodores.
