HARROGATE, TN -- Brandon Cowan and Kelly Dreier have been honored as the co-recipients of the Railsplitter of the Week award for the week ending on March 31st, the Lincoln Memorial University athletic department announced Monday morning.
Brandon Cowan, a left-handed pitcher hailing from Tequesta, Florida, garnered his second-consecutive Railsplitter of the Week honor after leading the Railsplitter baseball team past the Carson-Newman Eagles with his second-straight complete-game performance on Friday evening at Smokies Park. The 6'2" senior allowed only one run in nine innings of work, while surrendering only six hits. He struck out a season-high 12 batters and issued only one walk to spearhead a 2-1 victory for the 'Splitters. It was a gutsy outing for Cowan, as he waited out a more than one-hour rain delay before hitting the mound and slinging a season-high 145 pitches with 96 strikes.
Cowan improved to 4-2 on the season with the win, while dropping his earned run average from 5.80 to 4.29 after his last two appearances. Cowan has thrown at least six innings in eight-straight starts with a combined 18 strikeouts over his past two trips to the mound. The Railsplitters have won the last four games in which Cowan has started.
Kelly Dreier, a 5'4" sophomore out of Knoxville, Tennessee, earned a share of the Railsplitter of the Week award after playing the role of table setter in the Lady Railsplitter softball team's 3-1 week. Dreier notched two hits in all four games this week, lifting her average from .268 to .313 at the top half of the batting order. The middle infielder combined for eight hits, six runs, one double, two stolen bases and two sacrifice hits on the week, including four singles and four runs in the Lady Railsplitters' sweep of SAC foe Anderson University over the weekend. The Trojans came into that doubleheader ranked second in the SAC standings having won 11 of their last 12 games.
Dreier has compiled 30 hits in 96 at-bats this season, while ranking second on the team with 10 stolen bases in only 11 attempts. She has three doubles, two triples and 10 RBI with a .347 on-base percentage.
