Bulldogs drop 9-6 decision to visiting St. Catharine

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - A seven-run outburst was all the fuel visiting St. Catharine (Ky.) needed to walk away with the 9-6 win over Union on Thursday.

The loss drops the Bulldogs to 9-8 overall, while the Patriots improve to 13-6 on the year.

Union outhit St. Catharine 10-6, but the Patriots took advantage of 15 walks. Both teams had their chances to put more runs up on the board as they combined to leave 22 men on base with St. Catharine stranding 12 and Union 10.

The day was a little bittersweet for Nelson Price (Burkesville, Ky.) as he went 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs, but he also suffered the loss. Price lasted only a third of an inning and gave up four earned runs on no hits and four walks with one strikeout, putting him at 1-3 on the season.

Cory Klinger picked up the win for the Patriots, upping his mark to 3-0. He allowed no runs on two hits and no walks with two strikeouts in two innings of work.

Turning Point
Down 4-2, St. Catharine used a seven-run seventh to turn the two-run deficit into a 9-4 advantage. The Patriots scored the runs with only four hits but were aided by four walks. C.J. Englestad had the big hit of the inning, a two-run single. After advancing to second on the throw, Englestad stole third and then scored on K.C. Mejia's single to make it 9-4.

Aided by back-to-back St. Catharine errors, Union scored two runs in the eighth to cut the margin to 9-6. Vance Sullivan (Verona, Ky.) lined a RBI single, and Price scored on a double play to account for Union's runs.

The Bulldogs had runners on the corners with one out in the ninth, but the last two batters struck out to end the threat and seal the 9-6 Patriot win.

Carlos Herrandez had the best day at the plate for St. Catherine, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored and one driven in.

By the Numbers

• The 15 walks are the most by the Bulldog pitching staff this season. The previous high was seven against Lee (Tenn.) on Feb. 19.
• Price ties Tyler Brake's (Burlington, Ky.) mark for the most hits in a game for a Bulldog this season. Brake lined three hits against Asbury on Feb. 12.
• Union stole three more bases to give it 47 on the year. There have only been two games this season in which Union has not had at least one stolen base.
