KINGSPORT, Tenn. - The Union College men’s basketball team saw its season come to an end on Thursday evening, as the sixth-seeded Bulldogs dropped a 78-73 decision to third-seed Bryan (Tenn.) at the 2013 Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament. The event is being held at the MeadowView Convention Center.
With the loss, Union ends their season with a 15-14 record. Bryan improved to 14-15 with the win, and moves onto the semifinals of AAC Tournament to play second-seeded Point (Ga.) Friday night.
It was a defensive friendly first half, as Bryan sank a three at the end of the period to take a 28-25 lead into the break. The Bulldogs battled back throughout the period, after falling behind 8-0 in the game’s first two and a half minutes.
In the second half, Bryan opened up a six point lead (32-26) in the first five minutes, and continued to hold the lead the rest of the game.
UC cut the deficit down to a single point with 9:40 left (42-41) after Matthew Thomas (New York, N.Y.) drained a three. However, Bryan proceeded to go on a back breaking 13-3 run over the next four minutes to open up an insurmountable 55-44 lead with five minutes left.
The Bulldogs did keep things interesting late in the game, cutting the Bryan lead all the way down to four points at 75-71 with 19 seconds left. But, UC was called for an offensive foul in their attempt to cut into the lead further, as Bryan proceeded to salt the game away at the charity stripe, earning the five point win to move on in the tournament.
