Bulldogs split AAC twinbill with St. Andrews

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union baseball team came away with a doubleheader split in Appalachian Athletic Conference play against visiting St. Andrews (N.C.) on Saturday, winning the opener 6-5 in dramatic fashion but dropping the finale 15-3.

The Bulldogs are now 10-9 overall and 2-3 in conference play, while the Knights stand at 11-6 overall and 2-3 in the AAC.

Nelson Price (Burkesville, Ky.) led Union offensively in going 4-for-7 with one RBI and a run scored. LaVance Anderson (Bowling Green, Ky.), Zach Dillman (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Tyler Young (Manchester, Ky.) each drove in two runs on the day.

The teams will close out the three-game series with a nine-inning contest Sunday at 1 p.m.

Turning Point - Game 1
The Bulldogs scored two in the sixth and one in the seventh to rally from a 5-3 deficit to pull out the one-run victory.

St. Andrews used a four-run fifth to propel it to a 5-3 advantage. The Knights ripped four hits, three of which went for extra bases, and took advantage of a Bulldog throwing error to push the four runs across.

In the sixth, Ben Hartley (Lexington, Ky.) scored on a Anderson groundout to short. Later in the frame, J.D. Burrell (Amanda, Ohio) crossed the plate with the game-tying run thanks to a wild pitch. Union nearly took the lead in the sixth when Price singled to center with pinch-runner Travis Kottenbrock (Lima, Ohio) was gunned down at the plate, leaving the score knotted at 5-5.

The game appeared to be headed to extra innings as the Bulldogs picked up two quick outs in the bottom of the seventh. However, Miguel Mendez (Lansing, Mich.) doubled and then scored when Hartley singled to right to give Union the 6-5 victory.

Justin King (Barbourville, Ky.) picked up the win to improve to 2-2 on the year. He tossed the final three innings, allowing no runs on two hits and no walks with three strikeouts. Matt McCue took the loss for the Knights, dropping him to 1-1.

Anderson finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Dillman finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Turning Point - Game 2
St. Andrews started the game swinging away and did not let up as it posted the 15-3 decision.

The Knights scored scored four runs in the first with Matthew Beauchemin's three-run triple the biggest blow. St. Andrews got a two-run home run from Ryan Harrold in the second as the lead grew to 6-0.

The margin grew to 8-0 before Union posted its three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Price picked up one RBI with Young knocking in the other two, making it 8-3 after four. However, St. Andrews put the game out of reach with a seven-run outburst in the seventh.

Drew Hillard (Lexington, Ky.) took the loss for Union, giving up seven runs to drop him to 2-3 on the year. John Allen Renn picked up the win for the Knights to up his record to 3-1.

Price finished the game 3-for-4 with a RBI and run scored.

For St. Andrews, Beauchemin finished 2-for-5 with six RBIs, a triple and home run.
