GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- On a stormy Saturday night at Georgetown (Ky.), the Union College women's soccer team posted an impressive performance in their 2014 season opener, besting the host Tigers, 2-0, in NAIA action.
In a game delayed over an hour because of a lightning delay, Union controlled play in the first half, taking seven shots. One, however, was on goal, and Kayla Langen (SR/Burlington, Ky.) made the most of her chance, scoring the first goal of the season for the Bulldogs in the 38th minute to give Union a 1-0 lead. Payten Walters (JR/Charlotte, N.C.) was credited with an assist on the score.
The 1-0 score held into the second half, where both teams played just 25 minutes due to more severe weather in the area. 18 minutes into the half, the Bulldogs put the match away for good, as Aline Dalmedico (SR/Campinas, Brazil) scored her first goal of the 2014 campaign off a Jessica Frisby (SR/Russell, Ky.) pass. The score was more than enough for the Bulldogs to hang on for the win, as the match was called after 70 minutes of action.
Overall, Union and Georgetown fired nine shots in the match, with the Tigers holding a 7-2 edge on corner kicks. Despite that, Georgetown had just one shot on goal in the match, a shot that Union goalie Kendall Ellington (SO/London, Ky. ) stopped, preserving a shutout victory for the sophomore.
The Bulldogs return to the pitch on Tuesday, hosting Pikeville (Ky.) in their 2014 home season opener at Burch/Nau Field. Things get underway at 5 p.m.
