Bulldogs come up short in OT loss

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Union men's basketball team dropped a tough 72-69 overtime decision at Cincinnati Christian (Ohio) on Saturday, putting the Bulldogs' record at 6-6 on the year.

Union had a number of chances late in the game to register the victory, but the ball did not fall in the Bulldogs' favor.

"I thought out lack of rebounding and our inability to score late in the game is what cost us the game," said Union coach Kevin Burton. "We had several chances to score late in the game (to help extend our lead), but we just didn't get it done."

Union had two cracks at scoring the game-winner in regulation, but both rimmed out.

In overtime, the teams traded point for point most of the way. Matthew Thomas scored on a driving layup with 1:42 remaining to give Union a 69-67 edge.

With 3:34 left in regulation, Josh Smith scored to put the Bulldogs up 63-57. However, Union could not put Cincinnati Christian away. The Golden Eagles scored the next six points, tying it at 63-all with 34 seconds to play on a pair of Mike Hill free throws. Kenny Gaynor score a bucket and then hit 1-of-2 free throws with 49 seconds remaining to put CCU ahead 70-69.

After another Union missed shot, Hill was fouled, and he hit two more free throws to give the Golden Eagles a 72-69 lead with 11.1 ticks on the clock.

James Strange fired a 3-pointer to try to send the game to a second overtime, but the shot rimmed out as CCU held on for the three-point win.

Archie Adams led Union with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Thomas chipped in 14 points. Tarik Smith and Josh Smith followed with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

For CCU (5-6 overall), Hill led the way with 24, while Gaynor posted 21 points to go with 16 rebounds. Joe Shellman added 12 points.

Union next plays Tuesday at UC-Clermont. Game time set for 5 p.m.
