BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union College men's basketball team will enter the 2013 Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament as the sixth seed, and will open postseason play against third-seeded Bryan (Tenn.) on Thursday night at 9:15 p.m. The league announced the pairings on Sunday.
The tournament opens Wednesday with a play-in game between eighth-seeded Montreat (N.C.) and ninth-seed St. Andrews (N.C.). It concludes on Saturday with the championship game. The event is being held at the MeadowView Marriott Conference Resort & Convention Center in Kingsport, Tenn.
Union (15-13 overall, 8-8 in AAC) and Bryan (13-15, 9-7 AAC) spilt the season series, with both teams winning on their respective home floors. Bryan took a 73-69 win on Jan. 19, but UC returned the favor on Saturday at Robsion Arena, recording a big 78-58 win over the Lions on Senior Day. Union will enter the AAC Tournament riding a five-game winning streak, while Bryan dropped its final two regular season contests.
Elsewhere, the top-seed is Tennessee Wesleyan, the AAC's regular season champion after posting a 15-1 record in league play (22-7 overall). TWC will enter the tournament on a 15-game winning streak, and is looking to repeat as AAC Tournament Champions. TWC will open tournament play on Saturday, when they play the winner of Wednesday's play-in game at 12 p.m.
The next game scheduled for Thursday will have fourth-seed Milligan (Tenn.) (17-12, 9-7 AAC) taking on fifth-seed Reinhardt (Ga.) (11-15, 8-8 AAC) at 1:45 p.m., followed by a tilt between second-seed Point (Ga. (19-10, 10-6 AAC) and seveth-seed Virginia Intermont (15-13, 8-8 AAC) at 7:30 p.m. The Bulldogs and Lions will play immediately following this game, concluding a day full of games at the tournament.
The semifnals are set for 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Friday evening, followed up by Saturday's championship game, set to tip at 4 p.m.
