WEST POINT, Ga. - Point (Ga.) took an early first half lead, and never gave it up the rest of the game, on their way to defeating the Union College men’s basketball team, 82-72 in an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup Wednesday night.
With the loss, Union fell to 8-10 overall on the year, 2-5 in the AAC, while Point improved to 14-7, 4-3 in the AAC with the victory.
In the first period, Point opened up a nine point lead (25-16) 10 minutes into the game, and held off a UC rally near the three minute mark, in which the Bulldogs cut the lead down to two points (30-28) after a Tyler Wagner (Corbin, Ky.) three. To end the half, however, the Skyhawks went on a 9-3 run, and headed into the locker room at halftime up 39-31.
It was more of the same for the Bulldogs in the second half, as each time they appeared to finally be making a run at the Point lead, the Skyhawks would extinguish the threat quickly. The closest UC got to the Point lead the rest of the game was at five points (56-51) with nine minutes left.
In the game’s waning moments, Point put the game away at the free throw line, as the Skyhawks notched the 10-point home conference win over the Bulldogs.
Overall, forward Deante Johnson (Cincinnati, Ohio) once again led Union, scoring a game-high 20 points, while snatching 11 rebounds to record his fourth double-double in five games. Johnson also scored at least 20 points for the fourth time in five contests, as well.
Other double-digit scorers on the night for the Bulldogs included Wagner, who scored 18 points on the heels of 8-of-10 shooting from outside the arc, Tarik Smith (Tempe, Ariz.), who scored 11 points, and Matthew Thomas (New York, N.Y.), who added 10 points. Both Smith and Thomas came off the bench in the game.
Point was led in the victory by guard Brandon Hopkins, who scored 19 points.
Union will look to get back on track on Saturday when they travel to Bryan (Tenn.) for another road AAC contest. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
