ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The Union College men's basketball team is picked to finish fifth according to the 2013-14 Appalachian Athletic Conference preseason coaches poll, which was released on Wednesday.
Topping the poll is defending AAC regular season and tournament champion Tennessee Wesleyan, who received nine of the 10 first-place votes and 97 total voting points. In second is Milligan (Tenn.) with 78 points, followed by Reinhardt (Ga.), who garnered 70 total points and the remaining first place votes.
Bryan (Tenn.) is just ahead of the Bulldogs in the poll in fourth with 62 total points, as Union rounds out the top five with 60 points. Point (Ga.) (56), Virginia Intermont (49), Truett-McConnell (Ga.) (30), Montreat (N.C.) (27) and St. Andrews (N.C.) (21) make up the rest of the field.
Union, led by second year head coach Kevin Burton, went 15-14 a season ago, 8-8 in the AAC. The Bulldogs return seven players from last season's squad, includng All-AAC selection Tarik Smith and forward Deante Johnson, who averaged 18.1 points a game in just 10 contests.
The Bulldogs open their 2013-14 slate on Tuesday night, as they host Boyce (Ky.) at Robsion Arena. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
