ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The Union baseball team is projected to finish third in the Appalachian Athletic Conference in 2013, according to the AAC Coaches' Poll announced Wednesday.
Tennessee Wesleyan is the overwhelming favorite to win the conference championship. Tennessee Wesleyan, who is not only the defending conference champion but also the defending NAIA World Series champion, received eight of the nine first-place votes for a total of 64 points. Teams did not vote for themselves. Bryan (Tenn.) received the only other first-place vote and is second with 54 points. Right behind Bryan is Union in third with 52 points. Milligan (Tenn.) (42 points) and Reinhardt (Ga.) (34) round out the top five.
Montreat (N.C.) is sixth at 25 points, Point (Ga.) seventh with 16 points, St. Andrews (N.C.) eighth at 15 points, Virginia Intermont ninth with 12 points.
Union went 35-21 overall last year and 16-8 in the AAC to place third during the regular season. The Bulldogs advanced to the tournament championship game, but fell 5-3 to Tennessee Wesleyan in extra innings.
