Bulldogs Fall 8-6 in 12 Inning to Blue Raiders

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union baseball team made a number of comeback attempts, but in the end, the Bulldogs came up short as the Blue Raiders of Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) pulled out the 8-6, 12-inning decision.

The loss snaps Union's five-game win streak as it falls to 17-15 on the year. Lindsey Wilson extends its winning ways to eight straight as it is now 22-10.

From the outset, Union played catch-up the entire game. While the Bulldogs would routinely tie the score, they just could not push the
go-ahead run across.

The Blue Raiders came out of the gate strong, putting up a four-spot in the first inning. Manual Ozoria highlighted the rally with a two-run home run to straight-away center field.

Not to be outdone, Union reeled off four runs of its own in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded and no outs, Brandon Hedrick (Corbin, Ky.) kicked things off with a two-run single. Tyler Brake (Burlington, Ky.) and Zach Dillman (Cincinnati, Ohio) each drove in a run to tie the score at 4-4.

In the fourth, Lindsey Wilson picked up an unearned run when Union committed a throwing error attempting to complete an potential inning-ending double play. It remained a 5-4 contest until the eighth when Nelson Price (Burkesville, Ky.) led off with a solo home run to right. The four-bagger was his second of the year.

The Raiders took a 6-5 advantage in the 11th thanks to a Tyler Bernard RBI double. Lindsey Wilson could have done more damage as it had the bases loaded with one out. However, Tyler Brown (Cleveland, Tenn.) got the next two batters out on a shallow fly out and a strikeout.

Union was down to its final out in the 11th when Tim DeVito (Glendale, Ariz.) reached on an error to put runners on first and second. Clay Ragland (Chillicothe, Ohio) followed with a single to center, allowing pinch-runner Zach Gross (Bowling Green, Ky.) to score and send the game to the 12th.

With two on and now outs, Drew Barrett lined a two-run single to put the Raiders up 8-6. Brown got out of the frame without any further harm. In the bottom of the 12th, Union appeared poised for yet another comeback as the first two batters reached safely with back-to-back singles. However, the next two Bulldogs struck out, and the game ended with a fly out to left.

Hedrick led Union at the plate in going 2-for-2 with two driven in. Brown suffered the loss, putting him at 1-1 on the season. Drew Chamberlain (Cumberland, Ky.) turned in a solid relief appearance, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing one unearned run on two hits and seven walks with six strikeouts.

For Lindsey Wilson, Barrett went 2-for-4 with two RBIs with Manuel Alonso going 2-for-6 and three runs scored. Daniel Pulliam picked up the win, going 5-1 after pitching 4 1/3 innings in relief.

Union returns to action Friday and Saturday when it hosts
Appalachian Athletic Conference newcomer Point (Ga.). Friday's single, nine-inning game is set to begin at 2 p.m.
