BLUEFIELD, Va. - Taylor Eikenberry and Chris Fern both turned in complete-game shutouts as the Union baseball team swept both ends of an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader from host Bluefield (Va.) on Monday, winning 3-0 and 6-0.
Eikenberry (Rock Falls, Ill.) allowed three hits, walked none and fanned eight as the Bulldogs won the opener 3-0. Fern (Zephyrhills, Fla.) followed with a four-hitter in fanning five and walking none in the the 6-0 victory.
The wins improve Union to 16-14 overall and 4-4 in conference play, while Bluefield falls to 18-14 and 2-8 in the AAC.
Offensively, Brandon Hedrick (Corbin, Ky.) went 3-for-7 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Union and Bluefield will complete the series with a nine-inning contest Tuesday at noon.
Union took advantage of four Bluefield errors to push across two unearned run en route to the 3-0 victory.
Hedrick singled in a run in the first to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 advantage. Union tacked on two more runs in the fourth with Arthur Dockery (Detroit, Mich.) and Tim DeVito (Glendale, Ariz.) picking up the RBIs.
Meanwhile, Eikenberry took care of the rest. He allowed a single in the first but did not allow another base hit until the seventh when he gave up two. However, the Rams were unable to scratch out a run as the Bulldogs held on for the 3-0 decision.
Union finished with 10 hits - all singles, as Hedrick, Dockery and Joe Engle (Sidney, Ohio) all went 2-for-3.
Fern turned in his own complete-game shutout with a four-hitter in a 6-0 Bulldog victory.
Union scored once in the second, three in the fourth and two in the fifth. Hedrick picked up a pair of RBIs, and Cory Perreault (Phoenix, Ariz.) had a two-run double.
The Bulldogs had only five hits but took advantage of four Ram errors and three walks.
