BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -- The Union College baseball team scored 12 runs in the fifth inning to blow open the ballgame, as they posted a dominating 16-3 victory over Cumberlands (Ky.) in seven innings at Jerry Carey Stadium on Wednesday.
With the win, Union moved to 7-10 on the season, while Cumberlands fell to 8-10 with the loss.
Union got things going offensive right off the bat, as they scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 2-0 lead. In the frame, Tim DeVito (Glendale, Ariz.) led off with a single, then was knocked home on a Joe Engle (Sidney, Ohio) RBI double. Engle then scored after consecutive passed balls moved him home, giving the Bulldogs an early two-run edge.
After two innings in which both teams failed to score, Cumberlands got on the board in the top of the fourth to cut the UC lead in half at 2-1. The Bulldogs, however, answered in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs, once again, to take a 4-1 lead. Zach Dillman (Cincinnati, Ohio) had an RBI single in the inning, while DeVito picked up the other RBI on a sacrifice fly-out.
After Cumberlands failed to score in the top of the fifth, stranding two on base, the Bulldogs exploded for 12 runs in the bottom half of the frame to blow the game wide open at 16-2. In the inning, Union almost went through the lineup twice, as they pounded out 11 hits and forced three walks.
Cumberlands went on to score the final run in the top of the sixth, as the mercy rule went into effect after they went down in order in the top of the seventh, as the Bulldogs took the 13-run home win..
Overall at the dish for Union, freshman Nelson Price (Burkesville, Ky.) had another big day, going 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBI, and two runs scored. DeVito also went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Tyler Brake (Burlington, Ky.) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored. Meanwhile, Dillman was 2-for-3 with three RBI, and Donnie Popham (Louisville, Ky.) rounded out the top performances at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
On the mound, UC starter Jordan Mynear (Carlisle, Ky.) (1-0) earned his first win of the year after tossing four and a two-thirds. He only gave up a run on four hits. Sandro Ferreira (1-3) took the loss for Cumberlands.
