The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Men’s Basketball program is off to a hot start in the 2012-2013 season. The Patriots are off to a 5-0 record for the 2nd straight season and 4th time they have started 5-0 since 2008-2009. With exceptional ball movement and a fantastic field goal percentage, UC is entering Mid-South Conference (MSC) play on Thursday looking to stay perfect on the year. The first MSC Player of the Week awards were announced on Monday and one Patriots play earned him the honor.
Antonio Bumpus (Columbus, OH) was named the Mid-South Conference Player of the Week on Monday. Bumpus averaged 22.5 points per game in a pair of Cumberlands’ wins last week, including scoring 27 in a win over Webber International. The senior guard averaged nearly a double-double on the week as he pulled down an average of 9.5 rebounds per game.
Bumpus opened the week with 18 points and 13 rebounds in the Patriots’ 110-54 win over Morthland. He stuffed the stat page with two assists, two steals and a block in the win. In the Webber International win, Bumpus added six rebounds and three assists to go along with his 27 points in a 71-58 win.
For the week, Bumpus shot 48.4 percent (15-of-31) from the field, including making six of his 10 3-point attempts. He shot 9-for-10 from the free throw line. Antonio ranks fourth in the MSC in scoring (23.0 ppg) and seventh in 3-point field goal percentage (46.7). His 84.4 percent free throw percentage is fourth best in the conference. Nationally, Bumpus is 12th in scoring.
The Patriots will be back in action on Thursday as they open up MSC play as they travel to take on the Shawnee State University Bears. Tipoff is set for 8:00 pm.
