LEXINGTON, Ky. (WYMT) - Everyone knows that John Calipari is an expert at developing top level point guards; Tyreke Evans, John Wall, Brandon Knight, all were first round NBA draft picks, but since Calipari came to the University of Kentucky, he's also developed some pretty good big men.
"The way he gets them to play is like I've never seen," says former Kentucky guard Julius Mays. "Even the other coaches; Coach Payne and the rest of those guys, the way they work with the bigs and help them improve is just great for them."
Thursday night, Nerlens Noel will be selected in the first round of the 2013 NBA draft, adding to what is a growing list of UK big men to be selected in the draft under Calipari.
"I think whoever gets (Noel), it will just be great for (that team). I think he'll eventually be a franchise player and be a changer for a franchise."
Noel will join the likes of DeMarcus Cousins, Daniel Orton, Enes Kanter, and Anthony Davis as first round draft picks, and throw second round pick Josh Harrellson into the mix and you've got an impressive collection of centers.
"I think he gets what they do well and gets them to do it even better than what they do. Nerlens obviously was a great shot blocker but in his head he always felt like he had to jump at everything. Coach Cal just taught him to stay on the ground and let them come to you. 'You just just being there is going to make them alter their shot.' "
The incoming freshmen class is full of talented big men who look to continue the trend; Julius Randle, Dakari Johnson, Marcus Lee, all hoping to add to Calipari's legacy of developing top tier talent for the next level.
