Campbell's homer pushes UC past Columbia, 7-6

KINGSPORT, Tenn. - Union College sophomore Cameron Campbell hit two home runs, including a game-winning solo shot with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, leading the eighth-seeded Lady Bulldogs past fourth seeded Columbia (S.C.) in an elimination game at the 2013 Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament on Wednesday.

UC (14-29) moves on in the tournament's losers bracket, and will take on third-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan at 1 p.m. on Thursday. With the loss, Columbia ends the 2013 season with a 23-19 record.

The long ball was the name of the game for the Lady Bulldogs on the day, as UC hit four home runs to tie a program record as a team in one game.

Entering the seventh inning, UC led 6-4 after Jamie Cyrus hit a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead out to two runs. In the top of the seventh, Columbia scored a run off of reliever Gianna Schauer, but Schauer forced a ground out with two outs and runners on first and third that looked like would end it. But, the Lady Bulldogs made a critical error, and Columbia's Heather McDaniel scored from third on the play to tie the game at six.

In the bottom half of the frame, Columbia got two quick outs, setting up the stage for Campbell's heroics. The walk-off shot came on a 1-1 pitch, as Campbell put the pitch from Columbia's Lindsey Knipp over the center field fence to win it for the Lady Bulldogs.

Overall, Campbell led the way with her 2-for-3, two home run, two-RBI day. Ashley Wojnowski also went 2-for-3 on the day, with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored, while Danielle Borum was 1-for-4 with a two-RBI double, and two runs scored.

Schuaer (4-14) earned the win in the circle for the Lady Bulldogs. Columbia was led in the loss by Samantha Santoro, who was 2-for-4 with three RBI.
