Wise, Virginia-The University of Virginia’s College at Wise women’s basketball team notched another Mid-South win Thursday, as they defeated visiting West Virginia Tech by a score of 70-49.
The Cavaliers came out of the gate hot, jumping into the lead early and never relinquishing the advantage. The shooting discrepancy in the first half led to the Cavalier lead, as UVa-Wise connected on 43% of their field goal attempts while holding the visiting Golden Bears to 22% from the field. West Virginia Tech guard Amy Gardner was the game’s leading scorer, putting in 22 points.
The Cavaliers were led by senior point guard Amber Carter, who notched a major milestone in her UVa-Wise career. With an assist early in the first half, Carter dished out her 500th career assist. For the game, Carter led the Cavs in rebounds with 13 and added 11 points and five assists. Forward Kristin Mullins was the leading UVa-Wise scorer, with 16 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Chelsea Cluesman posted 14 points and nine rebounds, while Chelsea McNamee rounded out the double digit scorers for UVa-Wise with 14 points and nine rebounds.
Gardner led the visiting attack with 22 points and filled out the stat line with seven rebounds and two steals. Guard Amber Tully was the only other West Virginia Tech scorer in double digits, scoring 14 points and grabbing four rebounds. Point guard Nia Nolan led the Golden Bears in assists with five and added eight points and four steals.
With the win, UVa-Wise improves to 1-13 in the Mid-South Conference and 6-20 overall. The Cavaliers will be in action again Saturday, as they play host to Rio Grande. That game will begin at 2:00 PM and the action can be followed at http://www.uvawisecavs.com
