WISE, Va. – UVa-Wise scored a softball doubleheader sweep over NCAA Division II member Concord University at Cavalier Field on Monday. The Cavaliers scored four times in the second inning of game one and held on to post an 8-6 victory before building a 5-0 lead over the first three innings of game two en route to an 11-9 win.
In the opener, Kirsten Velazquez belted a three-run homerun and Kristina Romualdo hit a solo homerun to aid UVa-Wise (16-13). In the circle, Rachel Hawks recorded the win (9-7) by tossing five innings before giving way to Lannie Johnston who pitched two scoreless innings of relief to notch her first save of the season.
Hayley Wade and Becca Gleason were the only two players to record multiple hits for Concord (14-17) who made three errors in the loss.
The finale saw Sarah Wiltshire collect three hits, steal three bases, and score two runs in a Cavalier victory. Mindy Combs was a perfect 4-4 in the contest as she finished with four RBIs, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Romualdo also added two hits both of which were RBI hits.
Kellie Waycaster pitched 5.2 innings allowing four earned runs to record her sixth win of the season (6-3). Johnston again came on in relief to record the save, this time recording two outs for her second save of the day and season.
Brentlea Wood had two hits and three RBIs for the Mountain Lions while Jessica Seymour hit a solo homerun.
UVa-Wise will be back in action on Tuesday when the team travels to the University of Rio Grande for a Mid-South doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for 2:00 p.m.
