Wise, Va. - UVa-Wise went on a 33-5 run to bust open a 20-18 game en route to a 77-40 victory over visiting University of Rio Grande at the Prior Center on Thursday. Senior Chelsea Cluesman eclipsed 1,100 career points as she scored 24 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in the win. The point total increases the forward’s streak of 20 or more points to five consecutive games.
Rio Grande closed to within two points at 20-18 with just over eight minutes remaining in the opening half on a made bucket by Kate Hammond. The two point deficit was the closest the game would be for the remainder of the contest. Head Coach Kristin Kunzman’s Cavaliers responded with a 33-5 run to put the contest out of reach. In the run, eight different UVa-Wise players scored while Rio Grande was limited to three made field goals during the span.
In addition to Cluesman’s game-high 24 points, Charlotee Reasor scored 16 points on five of ten shooting. In addition, Katie Jo Lester added eight points off the bench and MaKenzie Cluesman grabbed 11 rebounds. As a team, UVa-Wise limited Rio Grande 24.3 percent shooting; the Cavaliers also forced the RedStorm to commit 22 turnovers.
Not one player for Rio Grande scored in double-figures and the 40 point total was the lowest of the season for the team. The loss drops the RedStorm to 2-5 on the season and 0-4 in league action.
UVa-Wise improves its record to 3-7 on the year and 1-3 in Mid-South play. The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday when Shawnee State University visits the Prior Center for a 2:00 p.m. tip. You can catch all of the action on www.uvawisecavs.com
