Wise, Va – In a season that has been like driving through the Appalachian Mountains, the Cavaliers women’s basketball team came through all the ups and downs with a huge win against Bluefield College, Saturday afternoon, 68-60. The win keeps UVa-Wise in the hunt for the final Mid-South Conference Tournament spot.
The Cavaliers jumped out to an early eight point lead against the Rams on a three-pointer by MaKenzie Cluesman with 13:14 left to play in the first half. After that shot Janee Simmons led the Rams on a comeback trail cutting the UVa-Wise lead to three at the end of the half with a team leading eight points. The Cavaliers did not trail at all in the first half being led by Chelsea Cluesman with nine points and seven rebounds as the team took a 29-26 lead into the half.
The Cavaliers were able to extend the lead to ten with a 7-0 run the first 2:16 in the second half. The Rams then began fighting back and took a two point lead with 2:57 left to play on a jumper by Teqa McNeal. After a missed three-point shot by McNeal on the Rams next offensive possession MaKenzie Cluesman gave the Cavs the lead for good with her second made three-pointer of the night.
Chelsea Cluesman returned to true form having a double-double and game-high 25 point and 13 rebounds. Kenzie Poindexter recorded a career high 14 points, making four of five, three point shots. Bluefield was led by Teqa McNeal with 19 points and Janee Simmons who had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
The win improves the Cavaliers to 7-15 overall and 4-9 Mid-South play. Meanwhile, the loss drops the Rams to 14-10 and 6-8 in the Mid-South. The Cavs are back in action this Thursday when the team travels to St. Catherine for a 6:00 pm game. You can hear all the action on www.uvawisecavs.com.
