Cavalier baseball swept by No. 12 Cumberland University

LEBANON, Tenn. - No.12 Cumberland University completed a three-game sweep of UVa-Wise on Saturday. The Bulldogs’ Anthony Gomez tossed a complete game shutout in the opener as his club posted a 4-0 lead. The Cavaliers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the finale before the host outscored the visitors 6-2 en route to a 6-3 win.

In the opener, Cumberland (33-13-1, 16-2 MSC) scored four runs in the game’s second inning and made it hold up. The Bulldogs’ Cory Urquhart and Craig Monson each lined two-RBI hits to stake the starter Gomez to a 4-0 lead.

Gomez made the runs stick as he pitched a complete game, six hit shutout. The left hander struck out seven and did not allow a walk in improving his record to 9-0 on the season.

For UVa-Wise (10-23, 6-12 MSC) Steven Allen and Brandon Fletcher each lined two hits in the loss; one of Fletcher’s two hits was a double. It was the only extra base hit in the game for the Cavaliers.
The Cavs scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning of game two when Brett Hylton doubled in Tommy Meier who had reached on a two-out error.

The Bulldogs responded with three in the home half of the frame as Daniel Harrison lined an RBI single to plate Urquhart and Richie Seaton’s base hit scored two.

Cumberland would extend its lead to 4-1 in the third inning as Harrison’s second RBI of the game scored Monson who had doubled with one out.

Two innings later, Woody Hunt’s team scored its fifth run of the game on a run-scoring base hit by Tyler Anderson. The run gave the Bulldogs a 5-1 lead moving to the sixth inning of the seven inning contest.

UVa-Wise mounted a rally in the sixth as Hylton had a sacrifice fly and Ty Lighton ‘s base hit scored Steven Klaiber to make it a 5-3 game.
The Bulldogs would plate a run in the home sixth as Urquhart’s base hit scored Josciel Veras for the final winning margin of 6-3.

UVa-Wise will finish the regular season with a four game home stand which will kick off on Wednesday when the team hosts Virginia Intermont. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. from Burchell Stallard Field.
