PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – UVa-Wise lost its third and fourth softball game in two days as host Shawnee State swept a Mid-South doubleheader from the visiting Cavaliers on Sunday. The Bears’ Kirsti Yates hit a two-run game winning homerun in the bottom of the seventh inning of game to give the host a 6-5 victory before her club posted a 6-1 win in the finale.
UVa-Wise (17-18, 7-9 MSC) jumped out to a 1-0 run lead in the top of the third inning on a solo homerun off the bat of Kirsten Velazquez. An inning later, Allyssaa Zebrowski plated a second Cavalier run on an RBI single that scored Charity Lawson.
Shawnee State (14-10, 8-4 MSC) answered with a single run in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI groundout by Abbey Barrett. The Cavs answered in the top of the fifth with a run of its own as Lawson singled in pinch runner Natasha Dean to push the lead back to two at 3-1.
The Bears would take the lead for the first time in the bottom of the sixth inning. Barrett hit a two-run homerun to tie the game at three. Brytan Givens would give Shawnee State the lead when she legged out an infield single to score Hannah Dittoe who had doubled earlier in the inning.
UVa-Wise responded in the seventh inning as Kristina Romualdo split the gap in right-center field to score Sarah Wiltshire and Christina Ziemba who had each singled to lead off the inning. The two-RBI double gave UVa-Wise a 5-4 lead moving to the home half of the frame.
With one out in the inning, Yates blasted a two-run homerun that cleared the right field fence to give the Bears the win.
In game two, Ericka Leighty, Kelsey Jenkins, and Holly Brabson each had two RBIs as Shawnee State completed the sweep. In the loss, no Cavalier had more than one hit as Bears’ starter Ali Thompson hurled a complete game five hitter to record her sixth win of the season.
UVa-Wise will return to play on Wednesday when Southern Virginia University visits Cavalier Field for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
