Wise, Va. - Any hope the UVa-Wise women’s basketball team had of making the 2013 Mid-South Conference Tournament vanished with Thursday’s 61-50 loss to #18 Campbellsville University.
The Cavaliers (6-18, 4-12 Mid-South) made just six first half buckets as the Tigers (19-7, 11-5 Mid-South) limited the host to 16 first half points. Despite the poor shooting, UVa-Wise trailed by only seven, 23-16 at intermission.
In the second half, the Cavs shooting improved to 46.2 percent but the 21 turnovers forced by the Tigers in the game proved to be too much to overcome. UVa-Wise placed three players in double figure scoring. MaKenzie Cluesman, 12, Chelsea Cluesman, 11, and Christine Nyobe, led the charge. Chelsea Cluesman also grabbed 11 rebounds to finish with a double-double.
Campbellsville received a game-high 13 points from Courtney Clifton off the bench.
With the loss, UVa-Wise falls to tenth place and two games behind Lindsey Wilson for the eighth and final Mid-South Conference Tournament berth.
The Cavs will essentially play a do-or-die game on Saturday when Lindsey Wilson visits the Prior Center for a 2:00 p.m. tip.
