Montgomery, West Virginia - It took five extra minutes but the UVa-Wise women ended a 13 game losing streak with a 96-87 victory over host West Virginia Tech on Thursday.
Junior Chelsea Cluesman continued her strong play for the victorious Cavaliers by posting 26 points and 13 rebounds. The double-double was the ninth of the season for the Jonesville, Virginia native while also marking the third consecutive game the forward reached the double-double plateau.
UVa-Wise enjoyed a 40-36 halftime advantage as Charlotte Reasor connected on three, three point baskets in the opening moments of the game to spur a 47.1 percent shooting performance by UVa-Wise in the opening stanza. The Cavs continued the hot shooting in the second half by connecting on nearly 52 percent of their attempts. Meanwhile, the host Golden Bears offensive kicked it up a notch by hitting five second half three pointers. The biggest came as the clock expired when Nia Nolan banked in a three to send the contest to overtime. The three point basket capped a run that saw West Virginia Tech overcome a six point deficit with less than 40 seconds remaining in the game.
In overtime, UVa-Wise’s hot shooting continued while Tech went cold. The Cavs hit 60 percent of their shots from the field in the extra session while limiting the Golden Bears to just one made bucket on seven attempts. Kristin Mullins spurred the Cavalier run in overtime by scoring seven of her 21 points in the period. Cluesman and Mullins were joined by Reasor, 12, Amber Carter, 14, and Christine Nyobe, 16 in double figure scoring. The Golden Bears were led by the duo of Amy Gardner and Roche Wimberly; Gardner scored 23 points on nine of 17 shooting while Wimberly scored 22 points on eight of ten shooting, Wimberly also had a fine night on the boards as she pulled down 12 rebounds to post a double-double.
With the win, the Cavaliers improve to 3-13 while the Golden Bears fall to 5-13. UVa-Wise will return to action on Saturday when the team visits the University of Rio Grande for a Mid-South contest. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m., results can be found on www.uvawisecavs.com.
