Wise, Virginia-In a game of runs, The University of Virginia’s College at Wise women’s basketball team ran out of time against the visiting Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders, falling 80-76 in Mid-South action Thursday.
The Cavs jumped out to an early lead with a red hot performance from the field, finishing the first half shooting 60% from the field and led 39-34 going into the break. But the second half saw the visiting Blue Raiders find their offensive groove, as they connected on 56% on their shots from the field and hit four three pointers to take a late nine point lead. But UVa-Wise would not go away without a fight, as they battled back within three points with less than ten seconds remaining. A late turnover combined with Lindsey Wilson hitting free throws sealed the Cavaliers fate in the four point loss. Lindsey Wilson forward Ashley Rainey was the game’s leading scorer, scoring 22 points on 9-12 shooting from the field.
Leading the way for the home standing Cavaliers was senior forward Kristin Mullins, as she scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds. Four Cavs finished in double digits, as Chelsea Cluesman scored 17 points and pulled down eight rebounds, senior point guard Amber Carter added 15 points and dished out eight assists, and forward Christine Nyobe rounded out the double digit scorers with a double double, adding 10 points and led UVa-Wise with 11 rebounds.
The visiting, nationally-ranked Blue Raiders were led by Rainey’s double doube, 22 points and 10 rebounds. Four Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders finished in double digits, as guard Ashley Franklin scored 16 points and guards Jasmine Brimm and Sarah Giles added 13 points apiece. Franklin was the main distributor for the visitors, dishing out five assists and recording three steals.
With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 5-15 overall and 1-8 in the Mid-South. UVa-Wise will be in action again Saturday, as they play host to 6th ranked Cumberlands. The game begins at 2:00 PM and all results can be found at http://www.uvawisecavs.com
