CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville University entered this weekend’s three game Mid-South Conference baseball series with UVa-Wise undefeated in league play and with a 21-4 overall record. The Cavaliers changed all of that by posting a 12-2, mercy-rule victory on Saturday. With the win on Saturday, UVa-Wise claimed the series after the two clubs split a pair of games on Friday.
Head Coach Hank Banner’s Cavaliers (8-14, 4-5 Mid-South) scored two runs in the top of the first inning as Michael McCollum and Brett Hylton each lined RBI singles. Two innings later, UVa-Wise busted the game open by sending 11 hitters to the plate in a frame that saw the visitors score six runs. Hylton, Nick Impellizzeri, Chaz Hall, Ryan Apodaca, Steven Allen, and Tommy Meier each had a single RBI in the big inning.
The Tigers (22-6, 7-2 Mid-South) would score a run in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single by Keaton Neeb and add an unearned run in the fourth frame to make the score 8-2.
UVa-Wise would not relent as they added four runs over the next three innings. Tyler Hutson lifted a sacrifice fly into the outfield to score Allen in the fifth inning before Allen had his own sacrifice fly in the sixth. The Cavs added a second run in the sixth inning when Impellizzeri raced home on a passed ball.
The final run of the game came in the seventh inning on an RBI base-hit off the bat of Brandon Fletcher to increase the lead to 12-2. In total, five Cavs had multi-hit games led by Hylton’s 3-4 performance. On the mound, freshman Mat Irish went the distance allowing one earned run on eight hits, the right-hander also struck out two. The victory improves his record to 3-2.
UVa-Wise will return to play on Wednesday when they travel to Southern Virginia University for a non-conference doubleheader.
