WISE, Va. - Visiting Shawnee State and UVa-Wise split a Mid-South Conference softball doubleheader at Cavalier Field on Wednesday. The host Cavaliers scored a 2-0 victory in the opener before the Bears took advantage of four UVa-Wise errors to post a 5-1 win in the finale.
In the opener, UVa-Wise’s (18-19, 8-10 MSC) Rachel Hawks was magnificent in the circle and her offense gave her all she needed in the opening inning to post the win. Hawks surrendered a one out triple Kelsely Jenkins in the top of the first inning; it would be the last hit the Bears would get in the game. Hawks fanned Kirsti Yates and Holly Brabson to end the inning to halt the scoring the threat.
In the home half of the frame, the Cavaliers struck for two runs as Sarah Wiltshire reached on an error with one out in the frame and later scored the first run of a two-out, two RBI single by Allyssa Zebrowski. The base hit also scored Charity Lawson who had walked.
The two unearned runs would be all Hawks would need as Shawnee State(17-11, 11-5 MSC) could not manage more than one base runner in any of the game’s remaining six innings.
In total, the right hander struck out seven and walked three in the complete game effort. The victory improved Hawks to 10-10 on the season.
The finale saw Shawnee State score three runs in the first two innings and never look back en route to the 5-1 win. Ericka Leighty, Abby Barrett, Tara Prater, and Alli Chapman all had a single RBI in the win. UVa-Wise lone run in the contest came on an RBI single by Christina Romualdo.
The Cavs will return to play on Thursday when the team plays host to the University of Pikeville for a Mid-South doubleheader slated to start at 6:00 p.m.
