Cavs unable to hang on in loss to Lindsey Wilson

KINGSPORT, Tenn. – Number one seed Lindsey Wilson College hit three home runs and overcame a five run deficit to claim a 6-5 victory over fifth seeded UVa-Wise in the second round of the 2013 Mid-South Softball Tournament.

UVa-Wise (32-20) scored all of its runs in the top half of the game’s first inning. Sarah Wiltshire lined a single to left field to lead off the game and advanced to third one batter later when Allyssa Zebrowski’s bunt was misplayed. Wiltshire would score the first run of the contest on an RBI groundout by Kristina Romualdo. Zebrowski added the second run of the frame on an RBI base hit by Megan Dillion. With two outs in the inning, Rachel Fischer hit a three-run homer to give the Cavaliers a 5-0 lead.

The home run by Fischer was the 41st of the season for UVa-Wise, a new school record.

Lindsey Wilson (45-7) got four of the runs back in the home half of the second inning. Following a UVa-Wise error, Jordan Hood hit a grand slam off of Rachel Hawks, who was starting her second game of the day.

Hawks and Blue Raiders starter Hood exchanged zeros on the scoreboard all the way to the home half of the sixth inning.

Lindsey Wilson would get its second homer of the game as Travativa Bowden led off the inning with a solo blast to knot the score a five.
In the visiting half of the seventh inning, the Cavs would threaten to regain the lead. Kirsten Velazquez singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. The second baseman would move up another base on a groundout to the right side. However, that would be as far as the senior would advance as Hood wiggled out of the jam to keep the score tied.

The Blue Raiders wasted no time in the bottom half of the inning as Kristinia Krupinski hit a solo home run to centerfield, completing the comeback.

With the win, Lindsey Wilson will play in tomorrow’s winner’s bracket finale at 2:00 p.m. The loss sends UVa-Wise to an elimination game against Georgetown College at noon.
