MARS HILL, NC -- Despite trailing by as many as 19 on Wednesday evening, the Lady Railsplitters were able to storm back to steal a 74-69 road victory at Mars Hill College. With this, their second consecutive win, LMU moves to 6-7 in the South Atlantic Conference and 11-10 overall.
The Lions controlled the pace for much of the first half as they shot out to a 7-2 lead with a three-pointer by Kristen Metcalf two minutes into the start. The Lady Railsplitters answered with a 9-3 rally in the next three minutes to grab an 11-10 lead. With 11:33 left in the half, LMU took their largest lead of the half at 17-14 with two free throws from Lauren Cochran.
The remainder of the half played out in favor of the Lions as Metcalf's jumper capped a 13-2 run that gave Mars Hill a 27-19 advantage with 7:47 left. At the one-minute mark, the Lions took their largest lead of the contest at 45-26 with a lay in from Armeka Booker. Two free throws from Dayshalee Salaman cut the deficit to 45-28 at the break.
By the time the clock reached 15:04 in the second half, LMU had nearly erased the Lions' lead with a 17-4 run powered by Dayshalee Salaman's seven points during that stretch. Less than three game minutes later, Edina Musa gave the Lady Railsplitters their first lead in the second half with a jumper. The Lions answered with a 10-2 run to establish a 61-54 lead with 7:24 to play.
Two minutes later, Kelsey Bradford finished off a 6-0 run for LMU to cut the score to 61-60 in favor of Mars Hill. With 3:31 remaining, Lauren Cochran's layup put the Lady Railsplitters on top for good. Two free throws from both MaRanda Boddie and Dayshalee Salaman in the closing minute sealed a 74-69 victory for Lincoln Memorial.
Lauren Cochran was brilliant in her 25 point performance as she went 10-13 from the field. She also grabbed five rebounds and notched a block.
Dayshalee Salaman poured in 22 points while grabbing six rebounds and dishing out four assists. She was a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line. MaRanda Boddie added ten points and five rebounds for the Lady Railsplitters.
LMU will now prepare for a South Atlantic Conference battle with the Wolves of Newberry College. That game is scheduled for Saturday, February 11th at 2 p.m. in Newberry, South Carolina.
