Colonels open 2012-13 season at home on Friday, season opener includes free admission

RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University’s men’s basketball team will open its 2012-13 season at home on Friday. Tip-off against Cincinnati Christian University is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at McBrayer Arena.

The basketball teams are joining efforts with the EKU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) for the season openers to collect toiletry items for the Madison County “Day of Hope” event. Head coaches Jeff Neubauer and Chrissy Roberts have requested admission to this doubleheader be FREE for all fans and are instead encouraging all fans to bring items such as deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste or other similar products to donate to the “Day of Hope” event.

The live radio broadcast of the game is available in the Richmond area on WCYO 100.7 FM, and can be heard worldwide on EKUSports.com. A live video broadcast of the contest is available on OVCDigitalNetwork.com.

Neubauer kicks off his eighth season as the Colonels’ head coach. He enters the year as the third winningest coach in program history, just 18 wins away from moving into second place.

EKU has eight players returning from last season’s 16-16 squad. Seven newcomers have been added to the roster. Among EKU’s seven newcomers is a pair of junior college All-Americans. Glenn Cosey was a first team All-American at Columbus State Community College. Tarius Johnson was a third team All-American at Three Rivers Community College.

Eastern has won 14 consecutive home openers dating back to the 1997-98 season. The Colonels posted a 107-43 victory over Brescia in their first home game last season. EKU stands at 31-7 (.816) in home non-conference games under head coach Jeff Neubauer. The Colonels finished 6-0 in home non-conference games in 2011-12.

Cincinnati Christian University, a NAIA Division II team, is off to an 0-2 start to the 2012-13 season. The Eagles lost 89-83 to Union College before falling 69-56 to Lindsey Wilson College.

This is the first-ever meeting between the two teams. Eastern hosted Cincinnati Christian College during the 2010-11 season.

Kenny Gaynor, a 6-foot-7 freshman forward, has led the team in scoring in each of the first two games. He had 25 points on 11-for-13 shooting to go along with seven rebounds against Union. Gaynor shot 6-for-14 from the field and finished with 17 points and five rebounds against Lindsey Wilson.
