RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University’s men’s basketball team rolled to a 97-31 non-conference victory over Crowley’s Ridge College on Tuesday at McBrayer Arena.
EKU Head Coach Jeff Neubauer became the school’s second winningest coach. The eighth-year skipper moved past Rome Rankin with 136 victories on the Colonel bench. He is 78 wins behind all-time leader Paul s. McBrayer.
Sophomore Robbie Stenzel had a game-best and career-high 14 points. He hit 5-of-6 from the field, including 3-of-4 from three-point range, to go along with three assists and three steals.
Eastern (18-6) used a pair of runs to take complete control in the first half. With the game tied 3-3, the home squad rolled off 14 unanswered. After the Pioneers (7-18) scored five straight, the Colonels went on a 23-4 run.
Glenn Cosey got it started with a three-pointer. Stenzel knocked down a trey, was fouled on the play, made the free throw and then followed with a lay-up for six straight points. Marcus Lewis capped it with another spectacular dunk. Cosey threw a behind-the-back pass up court while he was going out of bounds near the half-court line. Lewis took the pass and completed a windmill dunk for a 40-12 Eastern Kentucky lead.
The margin reached 30, 44-14, with just under three minutes left in the opening half. The Colonels had a 36-point lead at the break, 52-16. EKU shot 60 percent from the field in the first half and committed 15 fewer turnovers (19-4). CRC made 26 percent of its first half shots.
Eastern led by 50-plus the final 14 minutes. The Colonels took their largest lead of the game, 70 points, on a jumper by freshman Jaylen Babb-Harrison that made it 95-25 with three minutes left.
Eric Stutz contributed 13 points, seven rebounds and seven steals. Babb-Harrison finished with a career-high 10 points. Six Colonels scored in double figures.
EKU made 55 percent of its shots from the field while CRC hit on just 26 percent. The Pioneers turned the ball over 36 times, compared to just 12 for Eastern.
Eric Giersch came off the bench to lead Crowley’s Ridge with nine points.
The Colonels will be back in Ohio Valley Conference action on Saturday at rival Morehead State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
