Cox told he would "never be no player"

HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - Former Hazard Bulldog Johnny Cox enjoyed a successful basketball career; he was a state champion, national champion, and is now a Hall of Famer.

Cox is one of 17 former players and coaches that will be inducted into the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame later this summer, but he says early on he was told he wasn't good enough to play basketball.

"We got to practicing about a month and coach came to me one day and said, 'Son, you're going to have to turn your suit in. You're never going to be no player," says Cox. "I said, 'I thought I was going to be good. My teacher told me I was going to be a star some day.' He said, 'No. You just ain't got it. The best thing for you to do is turn your suit in and I'll make you be a manager.' That hurt my feelings bad. I went home crying. I was in eighth grade. My sister got after me for crying. I said, 'I got cut off the team.' "
