WILLIAMSBURG (Ky.) - The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Women’s Wrestling team has been successful throughout the 2011-2012 season and look to continue their success the rest of the year. This past week, one certain Patriot has stood out and has earned herself a spot amongst the top wrestlers in the country.
Patriot lady wrestler Sydney Nelson (Kingsland, GA) was honored when she was told that she had the chance to compete in the US Olympic team trials. She was given the qualification when she competed in the NWCA Nationals on January 7th, 2012 and finished in second place in the 155 kg. weight class. This standout performance earned Nelson the privilege of being one of the 170 athletes who get the chance to compete in the US Olympic team trials that are being held on April 21st and 22nd in Iowa City, Iowa.
Head Women’s Wrestling Coach Alaina Berube said “I am really proud of Sydney for qualifying for Olympic Trials. She has been working hard and improving all year long. She had a great college season, finishing 2nd at the WCWA Nationals behind Kristie Davis who is the most decorated female wrestler of all time from the USA. Sydney will be competing in the University Nationals at the end of March to try and qualify for the University World Team. It is also a qualifier for Olympic Trials so we will be looking for a few more of our athletes to qualify there.”
The Patriots will travel to compete on April 6, 2012 in Akron, OH for the University National Championships.
