WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - After a slow start to the season, the University of the Cumberlands (UC) baseball team has been one of the hottest teams in the country winning 9 of their last 10 games. That streak continued this week as the Patriots hosted Holy Cross College on Monday, March 12th and Ohio MidWestern College on Tuesday, March 13th at Doyle Buhl Stadium.
In the game against Holy Cross, UC got a strong pitching performance out of starter Cameron Smith (Louisville, KY; 2-0) who went 5 innings allowing 2 runs on 7 hits with 3 strikeouts in a winning effort. Jordan Cruz-Del Olmo (Miami, FL) had his best outing of the season in relief going 2 innings allowing no runs with 2 strikeouts.
The Patriots offense jumped on top 1-0 in the first on a sac fly by Hibraim Cordova (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico). Then in the third, after an RBI single by Claudio Valencia (Yuma, AZ), the Patriots extended the lead to 5-0 on a 3 run homerun by Alberto Mejia (Santo Dominbo, Dominican Republic).
After Holy Cross was able to cut the lead to 5-2 in the fourth, UC was able to add one in the bottom half on an error and one more in the fifth on an RBI double by John Doolittle (Sharpsburg, GA) to give them the victory at 7-2.
On Tuesday, in game one against Ohio MidWestern the Patriots had their best offensive game of the season as they collected 16 hits and 10 walks in getting the 21-2 win.
MidWestern jumped on top early 2-0 on back to back RBI singles by Sam Simms and Drew Staunton. The UC bats then heated up to score 21 unanswered runs including 9 in the second and 7 in the sixth.
With such a big lead early, Cumberlands was able to put in all their younger guys to gain experience and get at bats. Leading UC was Victor Morel (New York, NY), Charles Hyde (Fort Mitchell, KY), Blake Debacher (Miami, FL), Claudio Valencia, and Hunter Best (Jamestown, KY) who each had 2 hits apiece.
Getting the win for the Patriots was Keita Murakami (Wailuku, HI; 2-0) who went 6 innings allowing 2 runs on 4 hits with 9 strikeouts. Finishing the seventh inning in relief was Joel Rosario (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico).
In game two against Ohio MidWestern the Patriots were once again hot at the plate scoring 13 runs and collecting 15 hits in route to the 13-1 win.
Leading UC was Hibraim Cordova who had 2 hits and 5 RBIs including a 3 run homerun in the fourth. Victor Morel led the team with 3 hits and Charles Hyde chipped in with 2 hits as well.
The win went to the Patriots Quinton Warriner (Russell Springs, KY; 1-0) who went 5 innings allowing 1 run on 5 hits. In relief of Warriner was Nick Bellman (Loveland, OH) who threw a scoreless sixth and Landon Case (Lawrenceburg, KY) who threw a scoreless seventh.
“Our guys played well in our mid week games,” said Head Coach Brad Shelton. “We had a chance to get all of our guys some time on the field. Our pitching was good, defense was solid, and we put some runs on the board.”
