Cumberlands wins tough battle with Bears

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The University of Cumberlands used an 8-3 run in the middle of the second half to finally establish some separation and knock off the University of Pikeville 73-64 Saturday afternoon at the O. Wayne Rollins Center.

Pikeville took a 45-44 lead when senior Sally Roberts nailed a three from the corner with 9:35 to play. It came off a pass from freshman Peyton Wright and gave Roberts her fifth point of the game.

Cumberlands (13-8 overall, 5-7 in the Mid-South Conference) seem to right itself, and over the next three minutes regained the lead. When junior Jill Herman scored with 6:27 to play, the Patriots led 53-47.

Pikeville continued to battle, but could get no closer the rest of the way in falling to 5-14 overall, 2-10 in the league.

Unlike Thursday night when the Bears managed only nine first-half points, they stormed out of the gates to score the first nine of the night. Cumberlands missed its first seven shots in the game, and when sophomore Whitney Belle Jackson scored inside off a dish from junior Callisha Johnson, the lead was 9-0 less than three minutes into the game.

But Cumberlands soon found its range. After hitting 3-of-21 to start the game, the Patriots closed the half 7-of-12, and by forcing some 12 first-half turnovers, the home team took a 31-28 lead into the half.

Cumberlands finished the game 23-of-68 from the field and 9-of-35 (25.7 percent) from the arc.

Pikeville shot 44.2 percent overall and was 3-of-9 from the arc. The difference, however, came from the line, where Pikeville managed to make only 15-of-32 (46.9 percent) for the game.

Johnson led the Bears with 20 points in the loss, adding four rebounds, three steals and two assists. Junior Brogan Conley followed with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Jackson tossed in 10 points and pulled down 14 rebounds.

Junior Jill Herman led all scorers with 26 points, pulling down seven rebounds and four assists. She was joined in double figures by senior Dace Bicane and junior Erica Lane with 11 each. Junior Jackie Alexander tossed in 10.

Junior guard Jessica Upchurch led the Patriots on the glass with 13 to go with nine markers.

Pikeville will have little turnaround time, heading to Montgomery, W.Va., to play WVU Tech on Monday night.

Cumberlands will visit St. Catharine on Thursday for a 6 p.m. start.
