David Williams Appointed Eagle Softball Head Coach

MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State has appointed David Williams as head coach of the Eagle softball program. Williams, a Greensboro, N.C., native, piloted Mars Hill College to record win totals, postseason play and academic success during his tenure.

"I am extremely thankful for the opportunity to lead the Morehead State softball program and be a member of the MSU athletic department," said Williams. "I would like to personally thank athletic director Brian Hutchinson for his belief in me as the program's new head softball coach. The direction of the athletic department allows for all sports to compete at the highest level of the Ohio Valley Conference. It is that dedication and vision that will allow MSU softball to grow."

Hutchinson believes Williams is the perfect fit to lead the Eagle softball program.

“When I asked around about David, the answers were all the same…bright, dedicated, hard-working and a winner,” said Hutchinson. “David fits our vision, not only for Eagle softball, but in what we want MSU Athletics to be. I am thrilled to have Coach Williams join us at this stage of the program’s development.”

Williams has led the softball program at Mars Hill College since 2006 and has seen unprecedented success. The Lions had five consecutive winning seasons and earned a trip to NCAA Regional play in 2010. While leading the Lions, Williams earned 2007 South Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year honors, and his teams have boasted seven All-Region and 14 All-SAC selections. The 2007, 2008 and 2010 teams finished the year ranked among the top 10 in the region.

In 2007, in just his second year, he guided MHC to a school-record 34-22 season, compiling the first winning season in school history. He upped the success rate in 2008 as the Lions posted a 39-16 mark. He won 26 games in 2009, 29 in 2010 and 29 last season in 2011. In six years, he totaled a 179-132 record. In 2010, his team ranked second in the nation in defense.

All six of his Mars Hill teams also combined for 3.0 grade point averages or better, including his 2010 team that posted a 3.54 mark to rank as the highest GPA of any team sport in the SAC.

Prior to leading the Mars Hill program, Williams spent three seasons as the head varsity softball coach at Western Guilford High School. While coaching at Western Guilford, he also led the North Carolina Sundevils 18-and-under fast pitch softball traveling team.

Williams played baseball collegiately at Belmont Abbey in 1996 and 1997 and Emory and Henry in 1998. His wife, Jennifer, is currently head coach of the Mars Hill women’s basketball team.
