WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – UVa-Wise extended its winning streak to four by completing a doubleheader sweep of host Cumberlands (Ky.) in Mid-South softball action on Saturday. The visiting Cavaliers secured a 12-2, five inning, run-rule victory in the opener before scoring six unanswered runs en route to a 6-1 win in the finale.
UVa-Wise’s (22-19., 10-10 MSC) Rachel Hawks collected what would be the first of her two wins on the day in the opener. The right hander allowed two runs on four hits while striking out one and walking one in her five innings of work.
At the plate, Megan Dillion and Allyssa Zebrowski each had two hits. Dillion finished with five RBIs including a two-run homerun in the second inning.
Cumberlands (Ky.) (10-28, 4-20 MSC) jumped out to a 1-0 lead on an RBI hit by Gloriann Cordero in the second inning. The Patriots would keep the 1-0 lead until the top of the sixth inning when the Cavs scored three runs to take the lead.
Dillion, Mindy Combs, and Rachel Fischer all had a single RBI in the frame. DIllion had a sacrifice fly, Combs had a double, and Fischer collected a single in the three-run inning.
UVa-Wise scored three more runs in the top of the seventh as Kristinia Romualdo had a two-RBI single and Dillion lined a base hit to produce her seventh RBI of the doubleheader.
Coming on in relief, Hawks tossed four perfect innings to record the win. With the two wins on Saturday, she is now 13-10 on the season.
The Cavs will return to play on Monday when the team travels to Bluefield College for a Mid-South doubleheader. First pitch of game one is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m.
